STERILE PRODUCTS UPDATE

February 2018

Pharmacy Sterile Products Newsletters Docushare Archive

IV Fluid Shortage

The IV fluid situation is still ongoing. Of note D5W is very difficult to get. We are basically out of D5W 100 mL and 500 mL bags and very low on D5W 50 mL and 1,000 mL bags.

Supply Order Reminders

When putting up the supply order ensure products are removed from the box before being put on the shelf. After the order is put up, check the wire cart to see if there is room on the shelf for any of those “extra” products not able to be put up from last order.

Sterile Water Backorder

All sizes of sterile water are on backorder 10, 20, 50, 100, 1000 and 2000 mL. Nursing will start using saline to reconstitute IV Push antibiotics soon. Use the repeater pump when possible for reconstitution in the hood.

On-Q Pump update

Trauma surgery pilot is delayed for now to get orderset built and nursing education done. We also have issues acquiring drug and PharMedium is currently not able to provide ON-Q pumps for us.

Calcium Gluconate change

calcium gluconate 2 g is now being made in the robot in NS 100 mL. We are giving 14 day expiration when refrigerated. Some will be loaded in pyxis, but PSP will likely have to send more than normal.

TPN Labeling

All adult TPNs should now have 2 labels – 1 ABACUS label and 1 iCare label on the front of the TPN bag. This allows the nurse to have 2 patient identifiers when hanging TPN.

0.8 micron filter backorder

Blue filters are on backorder until March. You can use the yellow 0.22 micron filters or 0.5 micron filter needles when necessary.
