Sulfonylureas are not on Houston Methodist formulary, and are highly discouraged in the inpatient setting because of the potential risk for hypoglycemia secondary to long duration of action, highly variable nutrition status, changes in renal function, and drug interactions. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends insulin as the preferred treatment for hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients. Inpatient use of sulfonylureas may be requested as a non-formulary order for patients that refuse insulin.
