Penicillin G sodium should be automatically interchanged to penicillin G potassium on a 1:1 dosage ratio, unless the practitioner believes that the extra potassium cannot be tolerated. In these cases penicillin G sodium may be used. Pharmacists may perform this interchange automatically.
Penicillin G infusions cannot be auto-programmed due to pump limitations. These infusions must be manually programmed. When penicillin G is selected from the pump library, a message will be displayed stating that 1 unit in the pump = 1,000 units of penicillin G. The ordered dose divided by 1,000 should be entered into the drug amount field
