Comments:

Nitrofurantoin macrocrystals (Macrodantin, Furadantin) is restricted to pediatrics or situations when oral Macrobid administration is not possible (G tube administration/patients who cannot swallow capsules). Orders for Macrondantin/Furadantin in adult patients should be automatically interchanged to Macrobid.

Nitrofurantoin macrocrystals (Macrodantin)

  • 25 mg
  • 50 mg
  • 100 mg

Nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals (Macrobid)

  • 100 mg

 

For treatment of urinary tract infection, Macrobid should be used as 100 mg twice daily regardless of dose or frequency of Macrodantin ordered.

For UTI prophylaxis, Macrobid should be used as 100 mg once daily.
