BONIVA IV use is restricted to the Outpatient Medical department only.

Defer once monthly (oral) treatment to after discharge. Automatic discontinuation of oral bisphosphonates for inpatients due to safety risk involving patient required to remain in upright position for at least 30 minutes, to take with a full glass of water, to hold food, other liquids and drugs for at least 30 minutes after dose, and several other issues. Exception: alendronate 35 mg stocked for rare cases of Paget's Disease.
