Comments:

Due to the risk of gag reflex suppression and methemoglobinemia with CETACAINE spray, the following interventions are recommended for safe use:

  1. Limit to procedural use only - CETACAINE is floorstocked in many ICUs and procedural areas
  2. If ordered for sore throat, contact prescriber for an alternative (CHLORASEPTIC spray or HALLS lozenges)
  3. If ordered for mouth pain, contact prescriber for an alternative (viscous lidocaine, ONCOWASH, ORAJEL 10%, etc.)
