Amiodarone Taper PowerPlan Pharmacist Education

Allergy Issues (PPI says amiodarone contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to the drug or its components, including iodine; however, literature indicates little cross reactivity between amiodarone and iodine allergies):
When to call the physician/nurse:

  • The patient has an allergy to amiodarone itself
  • The patient has a history of anaphylaxis to an iodine product (this does not necessarily mean the patient cannot have amiodarone, but it should be discussed with the physician/nurse)

When not to call the physician/nurse:

  • The patient has an allergy to shellfish
  • The patient has an allergy to iodinated contrast media that is minor/mild

Protocol for intravenous administration directs for conversion of oral or placement of central line after 12-24 hours.
