Subject: masking requirements

As our community and hospital-wide COVID-19 positive numbers rise, so has our risk of exposure. Now more than ever, it is important for us to wear our masks, keep our distance, and wash our hands.

In the community, Dr. Landers of the Madison County Board of Health has announced that face coverings will be mandatory in Madison County effective today at 5:00. https://www.waff.com/2020/07/06/face-coverings-now-required-madison-county/

Within our hospital, Jeff Samz has issued a very simple guide to masking requirements:

So when should you wear a mask??

  • Anytime you are in a public area of the hospital.
  • Anytime you are in a clinical area of the hospital.
  • As soon as you enter the building.
  • Anytime you cannot maintain social distance from your co-workers, including in administrative areas, lounges, offices, and break rooms.
  • This means you should maintain social distance when you have lunch because you cannot eat with a mask on.
  • This also means that staff working in non-clinical areas and off campus buildings (the Plaza, the Cochran Center, etc) must maintain social distance or wear a face covering.

If you are indoors and near another person, you should be wearing a face covering.

Of note, nursing units that are familiar and comfortable with wearing masks and treating COVID-19 positive patients have had minimal COVID-19 positive employees, even though they have had most of the exposure.

If you practice distancing, wear PPE as prescribed, and sanitize your hands and work area, it helps protect you, your co-workers, your family, and our patients.
