Subject: Fwd: Doxycycline Back-Order Options

Pharmacists,

We are currently experiencing a back-order of doxycycline IV.  We will run completely out very soon.  If you receive an order for doxycycline IV please notify the prescriber that the IV formulation of this medication is on back-order and we currently have none in stock.  We do have plenty of doxycycline PO if they wish to convert to oral therapy.  If IV therapy is required, I have listed a few options below you can recommend:

  • Community-Acquired Pneumonia
    • Doxycycline IV + Ceftriaxone IV -->  Azithromycin IV + Ceftriaxone IV
    • Doxycycline IV + Ceftriaxone IV -->  Levofloxacin IV
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
    • Doxycycline IV + Cefoxitin IV -->  Azithromycin IV +/- Metronidazole IV
  • Skin and Skin Structure Infections
    • Doxycycline IV -->  Vancomycin IV
    • Doxycycline IV -->  Linezolid IV
    • Doxycycline IV -->  Clindamycin IV

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Jonathan
