Subject: mupirocin oint shortage

We are unable to obtain mupirocin ointment at this time. We need to preserve our current supply for documented MRSA wound infections, thus we need to be using the alternatives listed in # 1 and 2 below. Richard is looking through previous P&T minutes when we substituted povidone iodine for mupirocin in a previous shortage, so this MAY be an automatic switch. The polysporin substitution for EMPIRIC topical use may have to go through P&T to make it automatic (we can do so quickly), but for now you would need to contact the physician to switch. This would allow us to reserve mupirocin for documented MRSA wound infections. Please begin efforts to conserve mupirocin immediately. More info to follow tomorrow.
