Subject: opioid stewardship info for TJC - please read

One question that keeps popping up during TJC surveys is "tell me about your opioid stewardship program," followed by "how are you doing in reducing opioid doses". Actions we have taken are listed below; a graph of our usage of CIIs over the past 2 years is attached.

Opiate stewardship actions:

    * Implemented multi-modal analgesia options with non-opiate options

    * Implemented POSS (Pasero Opiate-induced Sedation Scale) to monitor for over sedation

    * Reviewed and streamlined order sets with transition to new clinical information system

    * Educated about initial doses of DILAUDID

    * Educated about non-pharmacologic modalities of analgesia

    * Restricted usage criteria for fentaNYL patches

    * Pushed for PO narcotics over IV

    * HH purchased new O2 saturation monitors with capnography monitoring

Please have this information handy if you are participating in a tracer. Thanks to Michael McDaniel for the graph and MIchele Durda for helping with the list of actions we've taken.

Lyn - this may be useful in other areas, too. DAVID
