Pharmacists,

I want to thank all of you for your help during the cefazolin shortage!  We were able to avoid a potentially devastating situation through your hard work.

Due to the complexities of the surgical cases at our facility as well as the implementation of Cerner, the pharmacy department will no longer automatically discontinue cefazolin after clean and clean contaminated surgeries.

We will be working with our surgeons and nurse practitioners to improve the use of post-op antibiotics in the coming months.  We hope to keep this stewardship initiative going, but will be managing this through prescribing instead of automatic discontinuations.

Thank you again for all your hard work with this shortage management.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Jonathan
