Subject: Cerner e-prescribing Outside Outpt Pharmacy Hours

All, 

Upon Cerner implementation, the majority of prescribed medications at discharge will be sent electronically to the patient's pharmacy rather than hand written as they are today. Cerner does not have the capability to prohibit e-prescribing to the Outpatient Pharmacy outside of our normal business hours, so there is the potential for prescriptions to be sent after hours. There will not be a representative from outpatient pharmacy available outside of normal business hours to fill and/or transfer these prescriptions. I've listed below the current hours of operation as well as some main talking points to utilize in the event that you receive a call after hours. 

• Any  e-prescriptions sent to Outpatient Pharmacy outside of normal business hours will be handled by outpatient pharmacy staff the following day.
• All controlled substance prescriptions will continue to be on paper. The physician must print and sign these prescriptions, therefore patients needing pain medication overnight will have the paper prescription to take to a 24 hour pharmacy. 
• In the event that there is an urgent need for a prescription that was e-prescribed to Outpatient Pharmacy, the nurse would have to contact the physician to call in a verbal order to a pharmacy that is open at that time.

Outpatient Pharmacy Hours of Operation

Monday- Friday        7:00am to 8:00pm

Saturday- Sunday 7:30am to 4:00pm
