10/10/18 DC -- IV diphenhydramine

Subject: IV diphenhydramine

We are still in the midst of a severe IV diphenhydramine shortage, with only a 2-3 week supply in stock. We need all pharmacists to take action on this now...

It is imperative that all patients who are ordered IV diphenhydramine for ANY reason other than a severe/anaphylactic reaction be switched to PO diphenhydramine. Please review Sentri-7 reports and profiles NOW and switch all possible patients to PO diphenhydramine.

I presented the shortage situation (and our handling of it) to MEC yesterday and they were 100% supportive of our actions, saying that we needed to do whatever is needed to keep a supply available for patients with severe reactions.

Thanks for your attention to and action on this request. DAVID
