10/01/18 DC -- bicarb

Subject: bicarb

FYI - Andrea is PROBABLY going to remove all IV bicarb from Pyxis tomorrow. We have to keep a supply for CV (and a few other relatively rare situations) and the best way to control it is to keep it in the Pharmacy. We are still below our historical usage, but usage in the quarter that just ended was up 31% over our usage in the period January-March 2018, so it does appear that some of the old habits are creeping back in.

A few people have told me that (anecdotally) UAB and our hospitalists seem to be using more. Please help us stretch our diminishing supply as far as we can by enforcing our P&T/MEC-approved criteria strictly.

Thanks for your help with this and other (especially local anesthetics!) shortages.

DAVID
