Subject: IV Magnesium - backorder

Magnesium IV is on national backorder.

To conserve IV product, the following changes will be implemented in adult patients:
1. Removing magnesium from Banana bags and TPNs.  This will be changed in iCare on Friday June 1.
2. Automatic pharmacist conversion of Magnesium to PO tablets for patients able to take PO or utilize NG tube
    - for 2 gm dose - 800 mg Mag Oxide ONCE
    - for 4 gm dose - 800 mg MagOxide tablet BID x 2 doses
    - IT will likely build this by Tuesday June 5th under the NSS tab similar to the Phos packets
3.  Magnesium infusions for L&D will remain the same.

Some magnesium IVPBs are available.  Utilize tablets if possible in patients.
Thanks.
