04/20/18 MD -- Scheduled multimodal traMADol and PCAs

Subject: Scheduled multimodal traMADol and PCAs

I've recently been getting some questions about whether the SCHEDULED traMADol on the orthopedic multimodal order set should be discontinued for patients on a PCA. Typically, we discontinue narcotic orders while the PCA order is active. However, we are treating the scheduled traMADol that is part of the multimodal regimen differently than PRN traMADol orders. Anesthesia has reviewed the multimodal orders and approved them. Scheduled multimodal traMADol may be given with the PCA (designed to reduce need for PCA use). However, PRN traMADol would be a duplicate with the PCA (PRN). Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Michele
