Subject: Emergency Department Inhaler process reminder (HHM)

When dispensing MDI's to the ED at HHM the following process should be followed:
  1. The respiratory therapist or HUA enters the MDI order into iCare and faxes to pharmacy

  2. Pharmacist verifies the order in iCare

  3. The MDI  is dispensed with the iCare label that contains the "federal law prohibits the transfer of the drug" warning at the bottom of the label

  4. Tube the MDI to the ED

  5. Respiratory therapist charts against  the order in iCare

MDI orders for the ED should NOT be entered with a frequency of RX and charted dispensed by pharmacy.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Steven
