Subject: Huntsville Hospital Medical Staff Communication: Critical azithromycin injection shortage
The following message is being forwarded to you on behalf of Huntsville Hospital Pharmacy Services.
Azithromycin injection is on critical national backorder, with manufacturer release dates estimated for late spring/early summer 2026. Please utilize oral azithromycin or therapeutic alternatives, as our supply will be completely depleted by early next week. If azithromycin injection is ordered and the patient is able to take PO medications, the order will be converted by a pharmacist to PO per the P&T-approved protocol.
If oral azithromycin is not desired for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, please consider:
Doxycycline for atypical coverage
Levofloxacin for monotherapy
For other indications, please contact your pharmacist for alternative recommendations. DAVID
**This change applies to MAIN at the current time; no changes at HHWC or Madison at this point.**
