The new NIOSH list of hazardous medications was released in December of 2024.
Previous versions of the NIOSH list contained 3 tables:
1 - antineoplastics
2 - non-antineoplastic hazardous medications
3 - reproductive-risk only
NIOSH has changed their classification criteria and reduced from 3 tables down to 2 tables.
1 - drugs that are known or probably carcinogenic or contain manufacturer's safe handling information (MSHI)
2 - drugs that are not carcinogenic but meet other hazardous criteria (organ toxicity, reproductive toxicity, developmental toxicity)
Several medications have now been recategorized based on the new criteria. Antineoplastic drugs are now in all 3 tables and many non-antineoplastic drugs are in Table 1.
We are currently in the process of changing the hazardous descriptions in Cerner, Pyxis, Micromedex and Rhazdrugs.
At HH we will use the following descriptions:
HazMed 1 - carcinogenic or contains MSHI
HazMed 2H - hazardous medication
HazMed 2R - reproductive risk only
I have attached a copy of NIOSH 2024. There is also a power point that was presented to nursing that summarizes the changes.
Table 1 in yellow shows a list of drugs that were upgraded from Table 2.
Table 2 in orange shows a list of drugs that were downgraded from Table 1.
Table 2R in pink has a mixture of drugs that were downgraded or newly evaluated.
