Subject: Discontinue Continuous Infusions/Drips instead of Void

Hey everyone,

Recently, Nursing reached out to me regarding a couple of instances where pharmacists Voided previously verified and active drip orders. There was no patient harm, and all drips were appropriately end-stated.

However, Nursing has expressed a preference: for continuous infusions/drips, they would like pharmacists to Discontinue the order instead of voiding it. The exception is when an infusion was entered in error and remains unverified—only then should the “void” option be used (always try to discontinue drips in PowerChart or MedManager first). This consistency will ensure that discontinued drips appear correctly on CareCompass for nursing.

Nursing discovered this during their chart audits, which aim to verify that nurses are accurately charting and titrating. While I don’t believe voiding should impact their reporting, I understand it might be confusing.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Your dedication and attention to detail have been instrumental in this overwhelmingly successful practice change since July 2022.

Thank you for all that you do!
