1/4/24 Planned change to medication Leaflet print options
January 4, 2024

Hey all,

A change has been approved by the Nursing Education Council that will remove the fastest option within Cerner for pharmacists to print Medication Education Leaflets, provided to patients going home on new medications.

Historically, there were two ways within Cerner for pharmacists to print leaflets:

  1. Right-click the medication order and go to Print, then Print English or Spanish Leaflet

  1. Go through Patient Education -> Medication Leaflets, and then manually searching for Leaflets you want to print

Option 1 was significantly faster, but is being removed because unfortunately using this pathway is not recorded anywhere in the chart, nor does it appear in the discharge pathway for nurses.

Option 2 is how we recommend pharmacists and non-nurses print leaflets, because when added via Patient Education the leaflets get recorded in the medication education section of the chart.  It is analogous to going through the nursing discharge mPage pathway.*

*Technically, one can also print leaflets by right-click and going to Reference Information, but that method is not recorded in the system either

Prior to change, Print button for leaflets available:

After change, print button for leaflets will be removed:

This change will NOT impact the ability to reprint Order Sheets (e.g. for TPN), or PrintRx to reprint Prescriptions.

Recommended pathway to print leaflets:

  1. Click on Patient Education from the toolbar
  2. Click on the Medication Leaflets capsule button
  3. Search for the leaflet you wish to print
  4. Click Print, or OK to print later

We will update when this change takes effect.  We have also reached out to Cerner in the hopes of changing or improving leaflet documentation (UCern December 2023 Pharmacy Community Call page), but have yet to receive a response.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this change
