Hey everyone,

I apologize for any confusion earlier regarding Cerner PDMP integration. I have received clarifying information regarding the current situation in Alabama. As it stands, only ambulatory providers are required to review PDMP within Cerner before prescribing C2-C4 controlled substances. It appears that our health system is only obligated to report PDMP usage for these providers. Consequently, our system has decided to focus on training ambulatory providers on PDMP integration at this time and has not made PDMP use mandatory on the acute care side. While inpatient providers can use it and some have for inpatients, their usage numbers are limited due to it not being a requirement.

Please continue to use the tool if it suits you.  I don't believe we have expanded the number of state databases included (3) compared to the website (36), but will provide an update if I hear of any changes.

You may already be aware of this and TOC is familiar with the methadone process, but all dispensers of controlled substances in Alabama are required to report to the PDMP except methadone clinics and federal facilities.  When I spoke to the AL PDMP administrator a few years back, she explained that most federal facilities (e.g. DOD, VA) report voluntarily to the PDMP.  She said nothing prevents methadone clinics from reporting either, but it is not required by law.  She suggested we call any area methadone clinics and politely pressure them into reporting if their data doesn’t show.

Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have, and if you encounter questions from providers, please direct them my way.

Many thanks,

Joseph

Hey all,

Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) Integration within Cerner is now live for Pharmacists, and providers are soon (if not already) required to review the PDMP within Cerner prior to prescribing C2-C4 controlled substances.  Please read the tip sheet uploaded to the following link for more information, including its limitations.  Probably the biggest problems you will encounter are with patient matching and with Cerner not being able to pull all the sources available from the regular PDMP website: Tip Sheet on PDMP Integration for Pharmacists

Also, if you have already successfully registered with the AL PDMP (https://alabama.pmpaware.net/login) please let me know if you encounter problems with your license within Cerner.
