Next week we will be changing the closed-system connector that is placed on hazardous IV medications for safe administration. We have been using Spiros connectors for many years but will be converting to the Phaseal Optima connector going forward. This should provide more consistent protection from incidental exposure to hazardous drugs.

The primary focus next week will be on the oncology-related nursing units who handle the majority of our hazardous medications. If an antineoplastic hazardous medication is administered anywhere in the hospital, an oncology trained nurse will be called to administer.

If a non-antineoplastic agent (Group 2 Haz Med or Group 3 Reproductive Risk) is ordered, any nurse can administer.  There are a few drugs that we prepare infrequently that fall into this category; mycophenolate, tacrolimus and ganciclovir are the most common. BD staff will visit the other nursing units for inservices throughout the week. Due to the infrequency of hazardous drug orders on these units, you may be asked clarifying questions by your nurses from time to time.

Plan:

The BD Oncology team will be on site Monday May 22 to conduct training sessions for Pharmacy and Nursing.  We will begin using the new devices Tuesday. The BD team will be present through Friday to support the transition.

Changes of note:

We will no longer use white/red caps for IV, SQ, or IM injections.   Intrathecal chemotherapy will continue to be capped with a red or white cap

There will be an additional connector needed for nursing administration. We will include the necessary BD connectors inside the transport bag with each preparation.

The oncology units should stock additional supplies on the unit. Non-oncology units will not stock additional connectors and injectors.

We will send the instructional flyers with the preparations for non-oncology units.

If you would like to join an inservice, the times are listed below.
