Pharmacists,

There has been a recall of neomycin tablets with a potential release date of early next year. These tablets are used in the pre-op setting for colorectal surgical prophylaxis. Alternatives for this medication have been reviewed by several of the infectious diseases physicians. Based on these discussions, the best alternative to recommend during this shortage for ADULT patients is levofloxacin + metronidazole.

If you receive an order for oral neomycin please contact the provider and recommend this alternative. If the patient is unable to take this alternative feel free to reach out to AMT (7-4200) for another option.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
