Subject: Exposure to hazardous medications

Good morning,

A question about handling an employee exposure to hazardous medications was asked recently. It is a timely reminder to review our hazardous drug exposure policy in case you are approached by nursing or fellow staff.

From the Hazardous Drug Medical Surveillance policy (in DocuShare) the steps listed below should be followed.

In the event of an acute exposure
     a. An example of an acute exposure may include, but is not limited to, any body surface coming in contact with the hazardous drug or excreta from a patient who has received hazardous drugs, inhalation of any mist, spray, or
powder from a hazardous drug, or needlesticks.
     b. If an employee is exposed, call 5-MSDS and CompOne for assessment and treatment instructions. Report incident to a supervisor and fill out an Employee Accident Report. CompOne will inform employee of any immediate
action that needs to be taken, i.e. if employee needs to go to the emergency department immediately. CompOne will contact Employee Health about the exposure. Employee health will contact the employee to set up an
         appointment.
