Beta Blocker Treatment Guidelines

  • Metoprolol tartrate or metoprolol succinate is recommended for hypertension management or rate control in A-Fib.
  • Metoprolol tartrate or labetalol, solution for injection, is recommended for hypertension management or rate control in A-Fib.
  • Labetalol is safe for pregnant patients who need to be on beta-blockers.
  • Carvedilol IR is recommended for HF, MI, ACS CAD, arrhythmia, SIHD, or angina patients.
  • Atenolol oral suspension is recommended to be restricted to use for the pediatric population.
  • Propranolol IR is recommended for patients with thyrotoxicosis, thyroid storm or cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension. Propranolol will be the recommended therapeutic interchange for those needing secondary prevention of variceal bleed.
