Multivitamins

Situation

The multivitamins class review and formulary standardization was approved at the January 2022 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

Background

The following medications were reviewed: general multivitamins, multivitamins with minerals, prenatal multivitamins, cystic fibrosis multivitamins, geriatric multivitamins, and pediatric multivitamins

Assessment/Recommendation

Changes effective: Tuesday, March 1, 2022

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health Medication Formulary:

  • Multivitamin infusion (no changes to current practice)
  • Multivitamin with Minerals
    • Tablet, Oral: Thera-M, Thera-M Plus, Therems-M
    • Liquid, Oral: Centrum (237 mL), Multi-vite (237 mL)
  • Cystic Fibrosis Vitamin
    • Softgel, Oral: MVW Complete D1500, D3000, D5000
    • Liquid, Oral: MVW Pediatric drops (30 mL bulk bottle)
  • Pediatric Multivitamin
    • Chewable Tablet, Oral: Flintstones with Iron
    • Liquid, Oral: Poly-Vi-Sol drops (50 mL bulk bottle, 0.25 mL unit-dose syringe, 0.5 mL unit-dose syringe)
    • Liquid, Oral: Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron drops (50 mL bulk bottle, 0.25 mL unit-dose syringe, 0.5 mL unit-dose syringe)
  • Prenatal Multivitamin
    • Tablet, Oral: PrePlus

Note: Stock of these formulary products may vary at individual entities

As a result, the following products will be removed from the UNC Health Medication Formulary

  • All other multivitamins with minerals
  • All other cystic fibrosis multivitamins
  • All other pediatric multivitamins
  • All other prenatal multivitamins

Non-formulary orders will be converted according to the following therapeutic interchange:
