Anti-Parkinson’s Disease Agents

Situation

The anti-Parkinson’s disease agents class review and formulary standardization was approved at the December 2021 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

Background

The following medications were reviewed: amantadine, apomorphine, benztropine, bromocriptine, carbidopa, carbidopa/levodopa, carbidopa/levodopa/entacapone, entacapone, opicapone, pramipexole, ropinirole, rotigotine, tolcapone, trihexyphenidyl

Assessment/Recommendation

Changes effective: Tuesday, February 8, 2022

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health Medication Formulary:

  • Amantadine IR capsule and oral solution
  • Benztropine tablet
  • Bromocriptine tablet
  • Carbidopa/levodopa IR tablet, ER tablet, and oral extemporaneous solution
  • Entacapone tablet
  • Pramipexole IR tablet
  • Ropinirole IR tablet
  • Trihexyphenidyl tablet

Note: Stock of these formulary products may vary at individual entities

As a result, the following products will be removed from the UNC Health Medication Formulary

  • Amantadine IR tablet, ER tablet, and ER capsule
  • Apomorphine sublingual film and injection solution
  • Benztropine injection solution
  • Bromocriptine capsule
  • Carbidopa tablet
  • Carbidopa-levodopa ODT, ER capsule, and enteral suspension
  • Carbidopa-levodopa-entacapone tablet
  • Opicapone tablet
  • Pramipexole ER tablet
  • Ropinirole ER tablet
  • Rotigotine transdermal patch
  • Tolcapone tablet
  • Trihexyphenidyl oral elixir
