Mood Stabilizers Formulary Update

Situation

The mood stabilizers class review and formulary standardization was approved at the September 2021 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

Background

The following medications were reviewed: divalproex sodium, lithium, valproic acid, valproate sodium

Assessment/Recommendation

Changes effective: Tuesday, November 16, 2021

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health Medication Formulary:

  • Divalproex sodium DR sprinkle capsule, DR tablet, and ER tablet
  • Lithium IR tablet and ER tablet
  • Valproic acid capsule and oral solution
  • Valproate sodium IV solution

Note: Stock of these formulary products may vary at individual entities

As a result, the following products will be removed from the UNC Health Medication Formulary

  • Lithium oral solution (discontinued from U.S. market)
  • Lithium capsule
