Magnesium Products

Situation

The magnesium products class review and formulary standardization was approved at the October 2019 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

Background

The following medications were reviewed: magnesium carbonate oral solution, magnesium oxide tablet, magnesium sulfate injection

 Assessment/Recommendation

Changes effective: Tuesday, June 29, 2021

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health Care System Drug Formulary:

  • Magnesium carbonate 54 mg elemental/5 mL oral solution
  • Magnesium oxide 240 mg (400 mg) tablet
  • Magnesium sulfate injection (no changes to current practice)

As a result, the following products will be removed from the inpatient drug formulary:

  • Magnesium carbonate oral powder
  • Magnesium chloride
  • Magnesium oxide 150 mg elemental magnesium (250 mg) tablet
  • Magnesium oxide 420 mg tablet
  • Magnesium oxide 500 mg tablet
  • Magnesium oxide packet
  • Magnesium chloride 64 mg tablet, DR
  • Magnesium chloride 71.5 mg tablet, DR
  • Magnesium oxide 140 mg capsule
  • Magnesium gluconate 27 mg tablet
  • Magnesium gluconate 54 mg/5 mL oral solution
  • Magnesium sulfate capsule
  • Magnesium sulfate oral solution

Non-formulary orders will be converted according to the following therapeutic interchange:

500 mg (27 mg elemental magnesium) once daily

500 mg (27 mg elemental magnesium) twice daily

Magnesium oxide tablet

400 mg (240 mg elemental magnesium) once daily

Magnesium chloride tablet, DR

535 mg (64 mg elemental magnesium) once daily

535 mg (64 mg elemental magnesium) twice daily

Magnesium oxide tablet

200 mg (120 mg elemental magnesium) once daily

200 mg (120 mg elemental magnesium) twice daily

Magnesium chloride tablet, DR

535 mg (64 mg elemental magnesium) once daily

535 mg (64 mg elemental magnesium) twice daily

Magnesium oxide tablet

200 mg (120 mg elemental magnesium) once daily

200 mg (120 mg elemental magnesium) twice daily
