Broad Spectrum Anticonvulsants
Situation
The broad spectrum anticonvulsants class review and formulary standardization was approved at the March 2021 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.
Background
The following medications were reviewed: brivaracetam, felbamate, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, perampanel, rufinamide, topiramate, zonisamide
Assessment/Recommendation
Changes effective: Tuesday, April 27, 2021
System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health Medication Formulary:
- Brivaracetam tablet
- Felbamate tablet and oral suspension
- Lamotrigine chewable, tablet, oral solution (extemporaneous)
- Levetiracetam tablet, oral solution, IV premixes and vials
- Perampanel tablet
- Rufinamide tablet and oral suspension
- Topiramate tablet and oral suspension (extemporaneous)
- Zonisamide capsule and oral suspension (extemporaneous)
Note: Stock of these formulary products may vary at individual entities
As a result, the following products will be removed from the UNC Health Medication Formulary
- Brivaracetam oral solution and IV solution
- Lamotrigine ODT tablet
- Lamotrigine ER tablet (24 hour)
- Levetiracetam ER tablet (24 hour)
- Perampanel oral suspension
- Topiramate sprinkle capsule
- Topiramate ER capsule (24 hour)
Non-formulary orders will be converted according to the following therapeutic interchange:
