System Formulary Update
Sodium bicarbonate 4.2% in 10 mL syringe and sodium bicarbonate

Situation:  

Following Pfizer announcing discontinuation of the ABBOJECT Emergency Syringe Platform, sodium bicarbonate 4.2% in 10 mL syringe (E3102) and sodium bicarbonate 8.4% in 10 mL syringe (E5749) was voted to be removed from system formulary at the February  2026 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting. 

Background: 

The following medications were reviewed: 

  • Sodium bicarbonate 4.2% in 10 mL syringe (E3102) 
  • Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% in 10 mL syringe (E5749) 

 

Assessment/Recommendation 

Change effective: Tuesday, April 14th  

System P&T vote to remove the following products from the UNC Health System Formulary 

  • Sodium bicarbonate 4.2% in 10 mL syringe (E3102) 
  • Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% in 10 mL syringe (E5749)
