System Restriction Update
Rituximab (Rituxan and Truxima)

Situation
A restriction update for rituximab injections was approved at the May 2020 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

Background
The following rituximab medications were reviewed: Rituxan, Truxima

Assessment/Recommendation
Changes Effective: Tuesday, August 11, 2020

System P&T voted to restrict use of the rituximab products on the UNC Health Medication Formulary, as below: 
     Use of Truxima for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is restricted to outpatient encounters or clinic use only (ie, no inpatient use)

     Use of Rituxan is restricted to patients in outpatient encounters or clinic use only (ie, no inpatient use) who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Continuation of therapy in patients who previously received Rituxan
  • Initiation of therapy in patients with insurance restrictions that do not cover Truxima

Note: Stock of these products may vary at individual entities
