System Formulary Update
First Generation Cephalosporins

Situation:

The first generation cephalosporins class review standardization was approved in the September 2024 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

Background:

The following products were reviewed: cefadroxil capsules, cefadroxil oral suspension, cefadroxil tablets, cefazolin powder for injection, cefazolin solution for injection, cephalexin capsules, cephalexin powder for oral suspension, and cephalexin tablets.

Assessment/Recommendations:

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health System Drug Formulary:

  • Cefazolin 1 g powder for injection

  • Cefazolin 1 g/50 mL intravenous solution (D5, Baxter)

  • Cefazolin 1 g/50 mL intravenous solution (D5, B.Braun)

  • Cefazolin 2 g/100 mL intravenous solution (D5, Baxter)

  •  

    Cefazolin 2 g/50 mL intravenous solution (D5, B.Braun)

  •  

    Cefazolin 2 g powder for injection

  •  

    Cefazolin 3 g powder for injection

  •  

    Cefazolin 10 g powder for injection

  •  

    Cephalexin 250 mg capsule

  •  

    Cephalexin 500 mg capsule

  •  

    Cephalexin 50 mg/mL oral suspension
