Miscellaneous Ophthalmic Antibiotics

Situation

The miscellaneous ophthalmic antibiotics class review and formulary standardization was approved by the System Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee in September 2019.

Background

  • The following ophthalmic medications were reviewed: bacitracin ophthalmic ointment and solution, Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment, tobramycin ophthalmic ointment and solution, gentamicin ophthalmic ointment and solution, azithromycin ophthalmic solution, sulfacetamide ophthalmic solution and ointment

 Assessment/Recommendation

Go-Live: Tuesday December 15, 2020

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health Care System Drug Formulary:

  • Bacitracin 500 u/g ophthalmic ointment (3.5 g)
  • Erythromycin 5 mg/g ophthalmic ointment (both 1g unit dose and 3.5 g tube)
  • Tobramycin 0.3% ophthalmic solution (5 mL)
  • Gentamicin 0.3% ophthalmic ointment (3.5 g)

Note: Stock of these formulary products may vary at individual entities

As a result, the following products will be removed from the UNC Health Care System Drug Formulary:

  • Azithromycin 1% ophthalmic solution
  • Gentamicin 0.3% ophthalmic solution
  • Sulfacetamide 10% ophthalmic solution
  • Sulfacetamide 10% ophthalmic ointment
  • Tobramycin 0.3% ophthalmic ointment
