System Formulary Update
Smoking Cessation Aids

Situation
The smoking cessation aid class review and formulary standardization was approved at the June 2020 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

Background
The following medications were reviewed: nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion, varenicline

Assessment/Recommendation
Changes Effective: Tuesday, August 18, 2020

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health Medication Formulary: 
• Bupropion hydrochloride tablets (IR, SR, and XL formulations) 
• Nicotine buccal gum 
• Nicotine buccal lozenge
• Nicotine transdermal patch 
• Varenicline oral tablet (restricted to continuation of home therapy)

Note: Stock of these products may vary at individual entities

As a result, the following products will be removed from the UNC Health Medication Formulary: 
• Bupropion hydrobromide
• Nicotine buccal mini lozenge
• Nicotine inhaler cartridge
• Nicotine nasal solution 
• Naltrexone/bupropion combination tablet
