System Formulary Update
Injectable Iron Products:
January 1, 1970

Situation
The injectabel iron products class review and formulary standardization was approved by the System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee in September 2020.

Background
The following medications were reviewed: ferric gluconate, iron dextran, iron sucrose, ferumoxytol, ferric carboxymaltose

Assessment/Recommendation
Changes Effective: Tuesday, November 10, 2020

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health Medication Formulary: 

• Ferric gluconate
• Iron dextran
• Iron sucrose – restricted to outpatient encounters or clinic use only (ie, no inpatient use)
• Ferumoxytol – restricted to outpatient encounters or clinic use only (ie, no inpatient use)

Note: Stock of these products may vary at individual entities

As a result, the following products will be removed from the UNC Health Medication Formulary: 

• Ferric carboxymaltose
