System Formulary Update
Mydriatic Ophthalmics

Situation

The Mydriatic ophthalmic class review standardization was approved in November 2022.

Background

The following products were reviewed: atropine, cyclopentolate, cyclopentolate-phenylephrine, homatropine, hydroxyamphetamine-tropicamide, ketorolac-phenylephrine, phenylephrine, and tropicamide

Assessment/Recommendations

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health System Drug Formulary:

  • Atropine 1% eye drops
  • Cyclopentolate 0.5% eye drops
  • Cyclopentolate 1% eye drops
  • Cyclopentolate 2% eye drops
  • Cyclopentolate-phenylephrine 0.2-1% eye drops
  • Phenylephrine 2.5% eye drops
  • Phenylephrine 10% eye drops
  • Tropicamide 1% eye drops

As a result, the following products will be removed from the inpatient drug formulary:

  • Atropine 1% eye ointment
  • Cyclopentolate-tropicamide-phenylephrine 1%-1%-2.5% eye drops
  • Homatropine 5% eye drops
  • Ketorolac-phenylephrine 0.3%-1%
  • Tropicamide 0.5% eye drops

Note: Stock of this formulary product may vary at individual entities

Formulary/Epic changes will Go-Live on Tuesday, January 10, 2022.
