Topical Anti-Infective

Situation

The Topical Anti-Infective class review standardization was approved in July 2022.

Background

The following products were reviewed: clindamycin lotion, clindamycin topical gel, clindamycin vaginal cream, clindamycin solution, gentamicin cream, gentamicin ointment, metronidazole topical gel, metronidazole vaginal gel, mupirocin cream, mupirocin ointment, mupirocin irrigation.

Assessment/Recommendations

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health System Drug Formulary:

  • Clindamycin 1% lotion
  • Clindamycin 1% topical gel (30 g)
  • Gentamicin 0.1% topical cream
  • Metronidazole 0.75% vaginal gel
  • Mupirocin 2% topical ointment
  • Mupirocin 0.44 mg/mL nasal irrigation (extemporaneous)

As a result, the following products will be removed from the inpatient drug formulary:

  • Clindamycin 1% solution
  • Clindamycin 1% topical gel (75 mL)
  • Clindamycin 2% vaginal cream
  • Erythromycin-benzoyl peroxide 3%-5% topical gel
  • Gentamicin 0.1% topical ointment
  • Metronidazole 0.75% topical gel
  • Metronidazole 1% topical gel
  • Mupirocin 2% topical cream
  • Mupirocin 0.5% nasal spray (extemporaneous)
  • Mupirocin 0.75% nasal spray (extemporaneous)
  • Retapamulin 1% ointment

Formulary/Epic changes will Go-Live on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.
