System Formulary Update
Magnesium Oxide and Amino Acid Chelate (Mg Plus Protein)

Situation

Magnesium Oxide and Amino Acid Chelate (Mg Plus Protein) has been approved for addition to the UNC Health Medication Formulary.

Background

In May 2021, it was determined magnesium chloride, DR tablet (71.5 mg elemental magnesium [595 mg] and 64 mg elemental magnesium [535 mg]) did not meet USP repackaging specifications; therefore, these line items were removed from System Formulary and applicable therapeutic interchanges were updated. Mg plus protein contains 133 mg elemental Mg that is chelated to improve solubility/bioavailability and reducing adverse reactions (ed. Diarrhea).

Mg Plus Protein was reviewed by the System P&T Committee in July 2022 for formulary addition.

Assessment/Recommendations

Given the clinical utility of Mg Plus Protein and low cost, it is reasonable to add this line item to System Formulary.

Formulary/Epic changes will Go-Live on Tuesday, September 13, 2022.
