System Formulary Update
Tetracycline Capsules

Situation

Tetracycline is being added to the UNC Health System Medication Formulary.

Background

Tetracycline was reviewed by System Anti-Infective in February 2018 as part of the class review for tetracycline antibiotics. Tetracycline capsules were removed from formulary at that time due to low use vs other agents within that class.

Recent data indicate an increase in the prevalence of clarithromycin-resistant H pylori isolates. Clarithromycin triple-therapy may be ineffective in 17%-35% of cases, leaving bismuth-based quadruple therapy (consisting of a proton pump inhibitor, metronidazole, bismuth, and tetracycline) as a remaining first-line alternative.

Tetracycline was re-evaluated for formulary addition in light of this information and is being added back to System Formulary.

Recommendation

The following product is being added to the UNC Health Medication Formulary:

  • Tetracycline 500 mg capsules (ERX 7797)

The addition will Go-Live in Epic on Tuesday, June 7th
