System Formulary Update
Abortifacients and Emergency Contraceptives

The go-live date has been adjusted to September 1, based on manufacturer distribution agreements that delayed purchases of some products

 

Situation
The abortifacients and emergency contraceptives class review and formulary standardization was approved at the June 2020 System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

Background
The following medications were reviewed: carboprost tromethamine, dinoprostone, mifepristone, misoprostol, ulipristal, levonorgestrel

Assessment/Recommendation
Changes Effective: Tuesday, September 1, 2020

System P&T voted to include the following products on the UNC Health Medication Formulary: 
• Carboprost tromethamine intramuscular injection
• Mifepristone tablet 
• Misoprostol tablet
• Dinoprostone vaginal insert 
• Ulipristal tablet 

Note: Stock of these products may vary at individual entities

As a result, the following products will be removed from the UNC Health Medication Formulary: 
• Dinoprostone vaginal suppository 
• Dinoprostone vaginal gel 
• Mifepristone (brand Korlym) tablet 
• Levonorgestrel tablet 
• Diclofenac/misoprostol combination tablet
