dexmedetomidine should generally not be interrupted during procedures unless there is a specific physician order.
dexmedetomidine (Precedex) persistent agitation guidelines
For severe persistent agitation, begin infusion at 0.1 mcg/kg/hr. Titrate by 0.1 mcg/kg/hr every 30 min to 0 RASS score (alert and calm). Monitor for bradycardia and hypotension. Document RASS with EACH titration. Max dose = 1.4 mcg/kg/hr. Notify provider if patient is at maximum rate for Precedex and not at desired RASS score. Two hours with consistent infusion rate, decrease rate by 0.1 mcg/kg/hr every 15 minutes to evaluate for resolution of agitation symptoms.
Per policy, these medications require cardiac and/or special monitoring.

The following orders are intended to provide a specific, safe, and effective means of initiating and titrating medications for critically ill patients. Physicians may modify doses and/or parameters as necessary pending patients' status.  For all medications listed below, the responsible LIP is to be notified if unable to titrate or the maximum dose is reached andgoals of therapy are not met.
