Due to the risk of methemoglobinemia with the use of benzocaine, ORAJEL and other benzocaine products intended for use inside the mouth are classified as non-formulary for pediatric patients. Reviewed: November 13, 2012

Due to the risk of gag reflex suppression and methemoglobinemia with HURRICAINE 20% spray, the following safe interventions are recommended:

Limit HURRICAINE 20% spray to procedural or ICU use only
If ordered for sore throat, contact prescriber for alternative (chloraseptic spray or Halls lozenges)
If ordered for mouth pain, contact prescriber for alternative (viscous lidocaine, Oncowash, ORAJEL 10%, etc.)
