INSULIN SAFETY CARD

FOR USE WITH U-10 DILUTED INSULIN ONLY

 

 

CAUTION: Diluted Insulin (10 units/mL)

 

  • This insulin has been diluted
  • It contains lispro (Humalog) U-10, or aspart (Novolog) U-10
  • This dilution is to be used for patients that require very small doses of insulin (e.g. infants or very young children)
  • It is diluted to make measuring of the dose easier
  • Insulin syringes are designated in SYRINGE UNITS.  The markings are based on 100 units/mL of insulin, which is the standard concentration of all commercially available insulin products.
  • POTENTIAL FOR ERROR EXISTS.  When using diluted insulin you must ensure that the amount of insulin has been drawn up to the correct mark on the syringe based on a concentration of 10 units/mL and not 100 units/mL.
  • Use a 3/10 mL insulin syringe (with ½ unit markings) to draw up the dose
  • Always “Round down to the nearest half unit”
  • Do not mix diluted insulin with other insulins.
  • Storage of diluted insulin:  14 days at room temperature.
  • Call the Endocrine Attending on-call with questions
